BUYER'S GUIDE
How to choose the best AI voice agent
Last updated: 19 October 2026
There is no single best AI voice agent. The best one handles your calls, in your customers’ languages, within the rules where you call, at a cost that works per conversation. This guide covers what to check, what to ask every vendor, and how Levrage answers, including when a different kind of tool may suit you better.
01Start with the job, not the demo
Demos are short and scripted. Real calls aren’t: callers interrupt, switch language, ask something off-script or hand the phone to someone else. Before you compare vendors, write down:
- The first call to automate, such as new-lead qualification, appointment reminders, payment reminders or order confirmation.
- What a good outcome is, in a number you already track: meetings booked, visits kept, promises to pay, orders confirmed.
- Who your callers are: the languages they actually speak, and whether they mix them.
- What must happen after the call: a WhatsApp message, a CRM update, a booking, a handover to a person.
Then judge every vendor on a pilot with your own calls, not on the recordings they choose to show you.
02Ten things to check
For each one, the question to ask any vendor, and how Levrage answers it.
Languages, and switching mid-call
Ask: Which languages does the agent speak, and can a caller start in English and carry on in Hindi?
On Levrage: 50+ languages and accents, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati and Hinglish. Callers can switch language mid-call.
Interruptions and pace
Ask: What happens when the caller talks over the agent, goes quiet, or says “hello?” during a pause?
On Levrage: Callers can interrupt; the agent stops, listens and carries on from what they said. Judge the pace yourself with a test call to your own phone.
Phone numbers and calling rules
Ask: Can I call from my own numbers? How do you help me follow TRAI rules, or the rules where I call?
On Levrage: Connect numbers you already own through Exotel, Knowlarity or SIP, or start with a Levrage number. Every campaign has its own calling window.
Answers from your knowledge
Ask: Does the agent answer from my documents, and what does it do when the answer isn't there?
On Levrage: Add documents, web pages, notes and Q&A, and the agent looks them up during the conversation. Before going live, check what it finds for any question.
Actions, not only talk
Ask: Can it book into my calendar, send WhatsApp messages and payment links, and update my CRM?
On Levrage: Bookings into Google or Outlook calendars, WhatsApp messages and payment links, a built-in CRM with live Zoho sync, Shopify write-back, webhooks and a REST API.
Handover to a person
Ask: When a caller needs a person, does that person get the context, or start from zero?
On Levrage: Warm transfers brief your teammate before the caller is connected, and supervisors can listen in and step in.
Testing before customers hear it
Ask: How do I know the agent handles awkward callers before it goes live, and after every change?
On Levrage: Chat test suites and simulated phone calls before launch, and Audit Lab (early access) to review real calls turn by turn.
Outcomes, not only minutes
Ask: Do I get recordings, transcripts and the outcome of every call, or only a bill for minutes used?
On Levrage: Recordings, transcripts, summaries, sentiment, outcomes and the details collected on every conversation, plus ROI dashboards such as cost per meeting booked.
Pricing you can predict
Ask: Is billing per second or rounded up to the minute? Are unanswered calls charged? Is there a platform fee? Is telephony included?
On Levrage: Pay as you go: ₹5.50 a minute on Voice Standard and ₹7.50 on Voice Advanced, billed by the second, with no platform fee and unanswered calls free. Monthly plans lower the rate, and higher volumes get custom pricing from our sales team. Telephony is at provider cost; prices exclude GST.
Data and access
Ask: Where are recordings kept, who can see them, and how are they deleted?
On Levrage: Recordings and transcripts stay in your Levrage workspace, roles decide which teammates see them, and you can ask for data to be deleted.
03Four kinds of voice AI tools
- Developer voice APIs are building blocks for engineers. They are the most flexible, and you assemble telephony, knowledge, the CRM, testing and reporting yourself. A good fit when voice AI is part of your own product.
- No-code agent builders get a single agent running quickly. Check how they handle campaigns, your CRM, Indian languages and what happens after the call.
- Contact-centre suites with AI add-ons suit teams already running a large human contact centre on that suite. The AI features vary widely.
- Customer-operations platforms put agents on calls and messaging together with the CRM, campaigns, follow-up automation and reporting. Levrage is this kind.
None is best for everyone. Choose the kind that matches who will build the agent and who will run it.
04Calling rules in India and abroad
A summary to help you ask the right questions, not legal advice. Confirm the current rules with your telecom provider or counsel.
- India, TRAI: commercial calls fall under TRAI’s TCCCPR rules, amended in February 2025. Promotional calls go out from 140-series numbers and service and transactional calls from 160-series numbers, with DLT registration, and automated calling must be declared to the telecom operator. People on the Do Not Disturb list need to have given explicit consent, and opt-outs must be honoured.
- India, lending: the RBI asks recovery calls to stay between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- India, data: under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, call recordings and transcripts are personal data. The notice and consent duties in the 2025 rules apply from 2027.
- United States: the FCC treats AI-generated voices as artificial voices under the TCPA, so automated calls need the person’s prior consent, in writing for marketing, and marketing calls are limited to 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the callee’s time. Several states need everyone on the call to agree to recording.
- UK and EU: automated marketing calls need prior consent, and from August 2026 the EU AI Act requires telling people they are talking to an AI.
On Levrage you set a calling window for each campaign, you can have the agent introduce itself as an AI at the start of every call, and CRM campaigns skip people marked as opted out or do-not-call. You remain responsible for consent and for the numbers you call from.
05Questions to ask every vendor
- Can I run a pilot on my own calls, with my numbers and in my customers’ languages?
- What happens when the caller interrupts, goes silent or asks something off-script?
- How do I test a change before customers hear it?
- What does a minute cost all-in: voice, telephony, platform fee and taxes? Are unanswered calls charged?
- Which of my systems does it update after the call, and who sets that up?
- How does it hand a caller to a person, and what does that person see?
- Who can see recordings, and how are they deleted?
- How will you help me follow TRAI rules, or the rules where I call?
06When Levrage is not the right fit
- You want raw building blocks to put voice AI inside your own product, and your engineers will build the telephony, testing and reporting around them. A developer voice API suits that better.
- Your callers speak a language that isn’t on our list. Ask us before you assume.
- You need a specific certification or an on-premise deployment. Ask sales@levrage.ai what we can offer today before you commit.
07Common questions
What is the best AI voice agent in India?
The one that handles your calls well in your customers' languages, follows TRAI rules and updates your systems after every call, so run a pilot on your own calls before you choose. For businesses that want voice and WhatsApp agents, a CRM, campaigns and follow-up automation in one place, in Hindi and regional languages, Levrage is built for exactly that, and you can start free.
How much does an AI voice agent cost in India?
Most are priced per minute. On Levrage, pay as you go costs ₹5.50 a minute on Voice Standard and ₹7.50 on Voice Advanced, billed by the second, with no platform fee and unanswered calls free. Monthly plans lower the rate, and higher volumes get custom pricing from our sales team. Telephony is at provider cost and GST is extra. When you compare vendors, add up voice, telephony, platform fees and taxes, and check whether short calls are rounded up to a full minute.
Can an AI voice agent speak Hindi and English in the same call?
The good ones can. Levrage agents handle Hinglish and follow the caller when they switch language mid-call.
Is it legal to make AI calls in India?
Yes, when the calls follow TRAI's rules for commercial communication: the right number series, DLT registration, consent where it is needed and opt-outs honoured. Lenders also keep recovery calls within RBI's 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. window. Confirm the details with your telecom provider.
How long does it take to launch an AI voice agent?
On Levrage you can describe the job to Bob, review the agent it builds and place a test call to your own phone before connecting anything else. Connecting your numbers, CRM and campaigns takes longer, depending on your systems.
